STORY

Every morning before sunrise, Nabil heard Grandma Mariam’s soft voice praying in the next room. Her prayers were as familiar as the ticking clock and the smell of warm bread.

Grandma prayed for everyone by name. She prayed for Father at work, Mother in the kitchen, Nabil before examinations and little Hana when she had a fever.

Then Grandma became ill and passed away.

The first morning without her felt strangely quiet. Nabil woke early and waited for her voice, but heard only rain touching the roof.

For several weeks, the family moved through the house like people searching for something they had lost. Father forgot to eat breakfast. Mother sat alone after dinner. Hana stopped singing while arranging her toys.

“Our home does not feel like home anymore,” Hana said.

Nabil understood. Grandma’s room was still there, but the peace she created seemed to be missing.

One evening, Nabil found a small notebook beside Grandma’s prayer mat. Each page contained names and simple reminders: Help Hana read. Thank Mother. Ask Father to rest. Visit the sick neighbour.

Nabil realised that Grandma’s prayers had always been followed by caring actions.

The next morning, he woke Hana and helped her prepare for school. At breakfast, he thanked Mother for the food. After class, the children brought soup to their elderly neighbour.

Father noticed the change. That night, the family sat together. They spoke about Grandma, cried a little and shared their favourite memories.

“We cannot replace her prayers,” Mother said, “but we can continue the love inside them.”

From then on, each family member chose one kind action every day. Hana drew cheerful cards. Father came home earlier on Fridays. Mother invited lonely neighbours for tea. Nabil helped younger pupils with homework.

The house was still quieter than before, and they continued to miss Grandma. Yet warmth slowly returned to every room.

Nabil learned that a loving prayer was not only words spoken softly. It was also patience, gratitude and service.

Grandma’s voice no longer travelled through the house, but the goodness of her prayers lived in the way the family cared for one another.
